History:Basil originates in India, but is widely used all over the world. It is an herbaceous member of the mint family. Sweet Basil is very characteristic for Italian cuisine. The botanical name "Ocimum" may come from the Greek "to smell", and it is sometimes used to imitate the smell of Lily of the Valley in soaps and fragrances.
